Home Sweet Home

Updated: Oct 31

Well, I finally found some time to sit down at the computer. I'm going to be honest, it's been a little overwhelming since the move to our new home! Tomorrow will be one week since we moved in (at the time of writing this), and it still feels like we haven't accomplished a whole lot. Pro tip: if you're disabled, make sure your handy partner has more than moving day and a single weekend off work. Even with a ton of help from my in-laws, we didn't get through nearly as much as I'd hoped. I'm finding myself stuck where I need Jesse to do the next step of something before I can continue too, in multiple rooms.

Enough of the complaining though, let's talk about the good stuff. So far, we haven't really run into any major unexpected problems. There were definitely a few temporary fixes that had to be put in place, and we still haven't quite figured out what furniture fits where and what we need to buy to solve organizational difficulties, but nothing earth shattering, thankfully! We have had a number of service people out to the house for various things, and everyone has been super kind.

Our senior neighbours on the right side are absolutely lovely. We have really enjoyed meeting them and hope that our boisterous kids won't disturb their peace in their retirement years. The house on the other side of us just sold. Based on the listing, it looked like it was two-unit student housing. We're very curious to see whether the owner will be another landlord, or if someone is going to flip it back to a single family residence and we'll have permanent neighbours. Either way, cross your fingers that we have minimal construction noise and great people moving in!

Coming from Cobourg, where the demographic is mainly seniors that look like us, or young families that look like us, it has been so wonderful to be in a city with so much diversity. There are certainly pros and cons of living so close to downtown, but so far we are thrilled with our choice. Last weekend, we attended Peterborough Pride, which was so busy and fun! This week we walked to the YMCA for a swim, we walked to the playground to burn off some energy, and this evening we'll be walking (if I'm not too tired by then) to the Memorial Centre to see the Peterborough Petes Pride game–which we got free tickets for from Peterborough Pride! Score!

Nótt–one of my canes.

Thankfully, my health has been fairly stable since moving here. I've been getting out to walk Fern twice a day, on top of all our other adventures. And while there are definitely days that I am symptomatic with my POTS or can feel my body fighting me by mid-afternoon with my CFS, I haven't had a single migraine, which is a huge improvement to my quality of life. I've also been taking better care of my body. I wear my compression socks every day, take my meds on time, and have been using my mobility aids more frequently–they really do help me conserve my energy and push off my symptoms, and it's silly that I waited so long to ask my doctor for his recommendation on this.

Overall, besides the chaos of the house right now, everything is going to plan, and I can't wait to share more about our new life in the city. But for now, I need to get back to work!

That's my life lately...

Laurel
